Creating a Positive Workplace Relationship : Appreciative Inquiry and Constructive Criticism
INTRODUCTION
Appreciative Inquiry is a collaborative and constructive inquiry approach that seeks for everything that keeps organizations, communities alive, successful, creative, and healthy in their interwoven ecosystem of interactions. Simply said, to appreciate is to cherish and identify that which has value—it is a method of understanding and valuing the finest in life. It indicates a research focus—a positive bias—seeking new knowledge of processes defined by adjectives like excellence, flourishing, abundance, resilience, or outstanding and life-giving in the language of Positive Organizational Scholarship.
In this sense, appreciate is to respect those things that are valuable—it is a method of knowing that is frequently associated with the concept of aesthetic appreciation in the arts. To appreciate also means to be glad or thanks for—it is a way of being and staying optimistic on life’s journey. Not to mention that appreciating means increasing in value. Combining the three—appreciation as a means of knowing, being, and increasing value—suggests that Appreciative Inquiry is a life-centric style of study as well as a constructive mode of practice. As a method of study, Appreciative Inquiry seeks systematically those capacities and processes that give life, strength, and possibility to a living system; as a method of practice, it seeks to design and craft human organizations through a process in which valuing and creating are viewed as one, and inquiry and change are powerfully related and understood as a seamless and integral whole.
Leading Positive Change via Appreciative Inquiry is a course dedicated to increasing our understanding and expertise in leading strength-based change, as well as how to establish, grow, and manage organizations where people flourish and perform at their best.
