Driving Performance through Benchmarking

INTRODUCTION

Benchmarking is an important component of continuous development. We don’t know how competitive we are or where we should focus our improvement efforts unless we benchmark. Benchmarking assists firms in balancing internal issue solving and improvement operations with external environmental realities. This includes other industries that provide comparable activities, geographically isolated firms, and non-profit or governmental organizations. Benchmarking may be undertaken by direct rivals under the correct conditions, resulting in increased performance that benefits all stakeholders. Benchmarking not only raises knowledge of what and where “best” performance exists, but it also facilitates the paradigm change that internally focused teams might struggle to achieve. It encourages the innovative adoption and adaption of “best” practices to assist companies in gaining a competitive advantage.
